Mathematics in a Person’s Everyday Life

Mathematics is applied in almost all aspects of a person’s everyday life. The measurement of distance is a mathematical figure, a person’s age denotes a mathematical number, calendar dates involves figures or number almost everything around us is attached to a number or has mathematical significance.

A mother preparing meals need to apply math to measure ingredients for her recipe, a father doing his carpentry likewise need mathematical application to complete his task, even kids playing games sometimes count the numbers to signal the start of a game and so on, the use and application of math is endless. Mathematics vary in difficulty and skill but over-all, it is generally applied in almost all aspects of everyday living. It is impossible to function without numbers no matter how simple the application is. Everything a person sees, from the surroundings to the confines of home, everything is somehow connected with measurement, numeric representation and figures. Everyday life is governed by mathematics and it is absolutely impossible to miss it.

Math Appreciation

In order to appreciate mathematics, one has to gain basic knowledge on its importance and proper application. There are a few areas that encompass the study of mathematics.

First is the Basic Foundations which deals with the very purpose and language of mathematics. Logic and Theory are dealt in the Foundation of Mathematics. Second is Algebra which is concerned with symmetry, sets and patterns as well as the rules to study and analyze arithmetic equations. The third is Geometry which primarily deals with shapes, sets and properties which are preserved under various kinds of motion. It generally has two subcategories namely Elementary Geometry which, as the name implies, studied by Elementary students and Analytic Geometry which is a more complex subcategory mainly studied by advanced elementary students, secondary students and early college students. The fourth is the area of Analysis which is about the study of functions, real number line, continuity and limit and is considered the major influence to courses involving trigonometry and calculus. Analysis is a very broad area because it is also concerned with Calculus, Complex Analysis, Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Optimization and Theory of Functions.

Another broad part of mathematics is not only concerned with computations but also with non-mathematical ideas and subjects. First is the Probability and Statistics which has dual nature namely mathematics and experiment. The second is Computational Mathematics which includes algorithms and information handling.

Some Mathematical Programs mainly focus on Mathematics as a multi-disciplinary subject which covers a broad spectrum. They include math subjects that deal with all the areas concerned with math such as analytical, computation, equation and patterns as well as the theoretical aspect. The usual subcategories of math included in a multi-disciplinary and relatively complete foundation includes Algebra and Number Theory, Topology and Foundations, Analysis, Geometric Analysis, Computational Mathematics, Statistics and Probability and Applied Mathematics.

The study of mathematics is broad, complex and consists of many other subcategories and branches which introduce the many functions of math in various fields, professions, areas and discipline.
